OPEN VILLAGE ACTIVITY “COME TO MILIES – EXPERIENCE LIVING TRADITIONS ON MOUNT-PELION”

The event was organized for the first time in June 1986 by Costas and Helen Fay Stamati, founders of the Private Collection of Milies, in collaboration with the Local Administration, with local craftsmen and housewives..

The event was a genuine, fascinating experience offering visitors the unique opportunity to witness local craftsmen working in their workshops and housewives occupied with daily chores. Visitors were acquainted with the local cultural heritage, with problems and toils of everyday life in a Greek mountain village.

Relative brochures, informative texts and photographs offered further information and various activities were available for children.

The event was followed by a group of ethnographers, Friends of the Geneva Ethnographic Museum in order to study the various activities. Their experience and comments appeared in the volume of Minutes of the Geneva Museum.

The open village activity was repeated during the next three years along with  exhibitions and lectures of cultural interest. However, the overgrowing, uncontrollable overflow of visitors obliged the Community to cancel the event.
